Taking the Shop-Lifting Problem Very Seriously

The owners of Frank’s Wine on Union St recently called me to discuss chronic theft at the nearby Walgreens and other crimes, such as trespassing and drug use, that spill over onto their property, scaring employees and customers.  It's to the point that Frank's is questioning whether to move forward with a planned new wine bar adjacent to his store. This is a huge problem. And while these types of crimes may not show up in conventional law enforcement statistics, if left unchecked, they negatively influence people's perception about the appeal of living and working in Wilmington versus the suburbs. I immediately set up a meeting with Attorney General Kathy Jennings, senior Police leadership, State Rep. Nnamdi Chukwuocha, and the City Solicitor to discuss what specific steps can be done to preserve this corner of the city (and beyond) as an appealing place to live/work. I will be working hard to coordinate between the different stakeholders involved to ensure this problem does not continue to fall through the cracks of bureacracy.

Excellent new book on Wilmington History:  2026 is America's 250th birthday and I look forward to a string of events celebrating this here in Wilmington. On that note, I highly recommend this relatively new book by local historian Bill Knightly:

Bill is an excellent writer. He does an incredible job tapping into the primary sources to write about a critical period in the American Revolution that took place here in Wilmington. I found it very interesting reading the angry letters from George Washington to Ceasar Rodney, written from here on Market St.

The City has made clear that retail marijuana is not permitted at this location.

Stapler Park Playground Project - when will it be done? Here is the exact schedule provided by the contractor. Realistically, the playground will be up in very late September or early October:

And # 3 - Rockford Tower Happy Hour at the Tower/ Winter Lights Kickoff will take place on Saturday November 8th this year.

Brandywine Park Farmer's Market Founder Plans Exciting New Venture on Lovering Avenue

Looking for something to do this weekend? The Brandywine Park Farmer's Market from 9am to noon continues its impressive run. And the "Women's walk" at 8am is fast becoming a Wilmington tradition, a great way to meet neighbors doing something healthy and social while enjoying iconic Brandywine Park, one of the best designed urban parks in the entire country.

Even more exciting, Katie Kutler, the visionary behind the Farmer's Market, is set to open up a new venture at the former site of Ciro 40 Acres.

Katie tells me that December is the likely opening.

Alapocas Footbridge to Imminently Reopen

Construction is clearly in the final stages and the bridge will be reopened in the near future.
